Art statement
David graduated from Sunderland University with a BA (Hons) Fine Art painting in 1993, and has been creating artwork ever since. In 1997 David undertook a PGCE in further education, focusing on teaching adults. In 2005 David embarked on a parallel career with Cywaith Cymru Artworks Wales before merging with Cbat to create Safle, the UK’s largest public art organisation, immediately managing projects with the National Museum Wales, Swansea’s Waterfront Museum, NHS Cwm Taf, the debating chamber, Senedd building and St David's 2 among others.
Having graduated as a painter, I now find that the process of making art is as important as the finished artwork. I react to environment and situation, take inspiration from drawing and employ a number of techniques to explore particular questions.
I make hand made negatives called Cliché-Verre Plates and use light as paint to create painterly colour images of a high intensity that are reproduced on to C Type Photographic paper. This process based method of making artwork begins with the creation of handmade large format negatives in the studio; in the darkroom various layers of negatives are placed together and with alterations to the filter in the enlarger, the print is made.
I am an award winning community artist having worked on a wide range of residencies in schools and in communities developing a variety of art projects. I have worked with young children and teenagers in a number of art, recycled material sculpture, puppet and hat making workshops and I have worked with people suffering from mental illness and dementia providing art therapy. For 13 years I have worked in Adult Education teaching drawing and painting skills for beginners, intermediates and experienced artists.
